Have you ever heard that men turn on sexually easily? It can happen even just because of an image that shows a bit of exposed body area, a swish of sound, or other triggers.

Why are men easily aroused? It is said that this is due to the role of hormones to brain nerves. But is this really the case?

The reason why men are easily aroused is attributed to various factors. Including the role of the brain in regulating it. Male libido resides in two areas of the brain, the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. When aroused, this cerebral cortex interacts with other parts of the brain and nerves so that it can speed up the heart rate and flow more blood to the genitals, then trigger an erection.
The limbic system includes several parts of the brain, including the hippocampus, hypothalamus, amygdala and others. Researchers at Emory University found that sexually arousing images can increase activity in the amygdala of men more than women. However, this does not mean that men are more easily aroused.
Talking about sex drive can be very subjective. It can vary from one person to another, even regardless of gender. Sex drive itself includes sensitivity to stimulation, frequency of sexual acts, and frequency of sexual thoughts.
When compared to women, men’s sex drive is also said to be higher. Testosterone levels, also referred to as the male lust hormone, are thought to influence this.
Meanwhile, the evolutionary perspective also plays an important role here. Women have to postpone sex because they need to recover after giving birth. On the other hand, men can continue to have sexual intercourse to increase offspring.
This factor is also closely related to social norms that assume that men are manly if they do or get it. However, if a woman does the opposite, it is called untrue, launching Psychology Today. The reason for the lack of adequate sex education is that many women do not get the stimulation they need to fully enjoy sex. As a result, women tend to lose interest in sex.

While many studies have explained why men are easily aroused, others have shown otherwise. This recent 2019 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science is an example. It explains that men are not more visual or easily aroused than women. That is, men are not always attracted to erotic visualizations.
The study analyzed 61 previous scientific studies that collected data from more than 2,000 adults. Each study conducted almost the same experiment, showing erotic images and videos to men and women with their brains connected to an fMRI machine.
After conducting a statistical review of the neuroimaging studies, it was found that visual stimulation is independent of biological sex. So, what makes men easily aroused?
Researchers think that hormonal status, attitude towards sexual material, level of arousal, and sexual motivation could be the reason for the difference in male and female brain perception. Visual sexual stimulation induces activation in the same cortical and subcortical regions in both men and women.
Rather than being innate, the notion that men are more visual and easily aroused than women is a social one. The myth continues to grow and become stronger as it is believed.
Why men get sexually aroused easily can be influenced by many factors. However, the factors are so subjective that they can vary from individual to individual. Don’t be surprised if many studies have different results.
